WE DENOUNCCE THE SITUATION OF THE COVERT PERPETUAL IMPRISONMENT
OF JOSÉ ÁNTUNEZ BECERRA - PRISONER IN THE PENITENTIARY CENTER
BRIANS 2 AND WE DEMAND THAT HIS LEGITIMATE DEMANDS BE ACCEPTED SO
THAT HE ABANDONS THE HUNGER STRIKE.
Ántunez Becerra has lived an entire life in prison: more than 40 years in prison considering that he
is 57 years old. Currently he is serving sentence in the penitentiary center Brians-2 for his
participation in the rebellion in Quatre Camins of 2004 after a judicial process full of irregularities,
having always denied the deeds with which he was charged.
A tireless fighter, he has a long history of confrontation against prison abuses: He was an active
member of the COPEL (Coordinator of Spanish Prisoners in Struggle) and more recently has
denounced the mistreatments inside of the prisons through his participation in the jail=torture
campaign. We denounce that the punitive cruelty which exists towards him happens in a large part
due to his history of struggle inside of the prisons.
The 23rd of January he began a new indefinite hunger strike to demand his immediate release. He
decided to initiate it in response to the continuous negations from the distinct institutional heads to
provide an exit from the situation of covert perpetual imprisonment.
In spite of the existence of legal arguments, he has been systematically denied access to penitentiary
benefits and his petitions and those of his lawyer have been disregarded. He is being applied the PIT
(Individualized Treatment Program), and it is the very treatment board of Brians 2 which have
failed to carry out the application of a treatment program which permits him to access the benefits
which correspond to him, thus the supervising tribunal of his case has the justification to deny all
possibility of freedom.
That is why we demand a break with these institutional complicities which try to condemn Ántunez
to perpetual imprisonment; We demand that a review of his case be made and concrete responses
and compromises given which permit to guarantee that in a brief time he will return to his friends
and family in freedom; we demand therefore that his demands be listened to and that a valid
opposing party meet with José Ántunez Becerra and this hunger strike can be put to an end.
