Palestinian anti-occupation forces blew up an Israeli military vehicle in the Gaza Strip, responding to the raid that the Israeli forces have recenlty launched.
Pan-Arab television stations reported that at least six Israeli soldiers were killed in the blast, but the Israeli occupation army refused to comment, saying the issue was under military censorship.
Rescue services rushed to get the six soldiers in the armored car out of the burning vehicle. It appeared several soldiers were killed and wounded in the explosion, a settler spokesman said.
The Islamic group Hamas said it blew up an armored personnel carrier and then filmed several dead and wounded soldiers being evacuated from the area. Hamas said it had targeted several armored cars during fighting in the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City.
However, the Dubai-based Al-Arabiya and the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera satellite channels said that Al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Jihad group, and Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas group, had claimed responsibility for the bombing. Both TV stations were monitored in Beirut.
Israeli occupation forces entered the Zeitoun neighborhood before dawn exchanging fire with Palestinian gunmen, killing at least three Palestinians, Israeli officials said. Soldiers took up positions on three rooftops and surrounded one house.
During the intense fighting, an Israeli armored car and bulldozer were hit by a roadside bomb, Palestinian residents in Gaza said. The Zeitoun neighborhood, across from the isolated Jewish settlement of Netzarim, is known as a stronghold of Islamic groups.
At least two Hamas fighters were killed in the fighting. A third unidentified Palestinian was also killed, hospital officials in Gaza said. |
