Greek Officials Attacked by Protestors Escape Corfu by Boat |
Late Wednesday evening at around 22.30, hundreds of ”indignants” on Corfu island gathered around a restaurant in the Old Fortress, where a dinner was being held for European MPs, participating in works of the Immigration and Refugee of Europe.
Among the MPs attending the dinner, were Deputy Minister of Labour, Anna Dalara, Pasok MP, Ntinos Vrettos, Pasok MP, Angela Gerekou and Nikos Dendias who is also Vice-President of the Refugee Board.
The protesters blocked the exit, preventing the officials from leaving and began shouting slogans such as ‘thieves’ and ‘traitors’ that strongly condemned them. As a result, a boat was sent in order for the Ministers and MP’s to leave the island without further commotion.

Government spokesman under attack
Government spokesman Yiorgos Petalotis was attacked and booed by citizens at the Argyroupolis area of Athens, where he participated at a governing party event. More than 50 people were expecting him at the door and, as he arrived, they started verbally attacking him and throwing eggs, yoghurts and stones. The crowd was repulsed by the police.
Such incidents are growing in number since Greece entered into recession, the most serious concerning the public beating of ex ND-minister Kostis Hatzidakis, during a protest rally on December 15.
Government vice president Theodoros Pangalos has been attacked by protesters multiple times in the past few months.
Last September, radiologist Stergios Prapavesis threw his shoe at George Papandreou as the PM exited the Thessaloniki International Fair.
Health minister Andreas Loverdos was forced to leave a book presentation earlier in March, after a group of citizens broke into the bookstore in which the presentation was talking place and started verbally attacking him.
Opposition New Democracy MP Aris Spiliotopoulos, who was also present, left the venue amidst boos. |

A finales de la noche del miércoles, hacia las 22:30, cientos de “indignados” de la isla de Corfú, se juntaron alrededor de un restaurante en la Vieja Fortaleza, en donde estaba teniendo lugar una cena preparada para los eurodiputados que participaban en tareas de Inmigración y Refugiandos en Europa.
Entre los eurodiputados que asistían a la cena, estaba la Ministra de Trabajo, Anna Dalara, diputada del PASOK, Ntinos Vrettos, diputado del PASOK, Angela Gerekou y Nikos Dendias que también es vicepresidente de la Junta para los Refugiados.
Los manifestantes bloquearon la salida, evitando que los políticos pudieran salir y comenzaron a gritar eslóganes como “ladrones” y “traidores” que los condenaban duramente. Como resultado, fue enviado un barco para que los Ministros y los eurodiputados pudieran abandonar la isla sin mayores conmociones.
Portavoz del Gobierno bajo ataque
El portavoz del Gobierno Yiorgos Petalotis fue atacado y abucheado por los ciudadanos del barrio de Argyroupolis de Atenas, donde participaba en un acto del partido gobernante. Más de 50 personas le estaban esperando en la puerta, y, cuando llegó, comenzaron a atacarle verbalmente y a lanzarle huevos, yogures y piedras. La muchedumbre fue repelida por la policía.
Este tipo de incidentes está creciendo desde que Grecia entró en recesión, el más serio hasta ahora ha sido la paliza que recibió el exministro de N.D., Kostis Hatzidakos, durante una manifestación de protesta el 15 de diciembre.
El vicepresidente del Gobierno Theodoros Pangalos ha sido atacado por los manifestantes varias veces en los últimos meses.
El pasado mes de septiembre, el radiólogo Stergios Prapavesis le lanzó un zapato a George Papandreu cuando éste salía de la Feria Internacional de Thessaloniki.
El ministro de Sanidad, Andreas Loverdos, se vio forzado a abandonar la presentación de su libro a comienzos de marzo, después de que un grupo de ciudadanos entrara en la librería en la que la presentación estaba teniendo lugar y comenzara a insultar al ministro. El diputado de la oposición, de Nueva Democracia, Aris Spiliotopoulos, que también estaba presente tuvo que abandonar el lugar entre abucheos.
