Update: Netherlands after the Squatting Ban
On the first of October squatting in the Netherlands has been criminalised. The major cities, though decided not to execute this law.
When the new mayor of Amsterdam Eberhard van der Laan announced a week ago to evict all of the existing 300 squats as soon as possible, people were very surprised and angry at the events.
The next day the main prosecutor for squatting cases Otto van der Bijl and the chief of the special eviction unit Leen Schaap got threatened and are now under 24 hours police protection.
As an answer to the new eviction policy 800 squatters and sympathisers demonstrated on the first of October in Amsterdam. Out of the demo a house got squatted and the group remained for a while to support and celebrate this first so called “illegal squatting action”. After a while the demo proceeded towards the endpoint. After a few hundred meters the people involved got violently attacked by the cops on foot and on horse-back, who tried to first enter the demo from the front, but found themselves successfully fought back. Only when the cops stormed the mass on horses from the back the group separated. This didn't stop the squatters from fighting back and taking over the streets, which resulted in riots for several hours in the Amsterdam inner city.
For the first time in a decade cops tried to stop the riot by throwing teargas grenades into the demonstration.
In total 11 people got arrested, some cops and people got hurt and some demonstrators were hospitalised of which one person with two cracks in the skull. The hospital and the individual are suing the cops for attempted manslaughter. All arrestees are free.
The following day another demonstration against the squatting ban took place in Nijmegen with about 600 people. Also here it came to a violent confrontation with the police. Police on horses trampled on the demonstrators and people got seriously hurt. 9 people were held in prison until recently. All arrestees are free again.
In the following days a police station in Amsterdam got attacked with Molotov cocktails. The act has not been claimed by any individual or group.
Since Friday riot cops, special military police, water canons and helicopters have been in high concentrations throughout Amsterdam. The strategy of the city of Amsterdam seems to be keeping all the squatters in a constant state of emergency, which leads to a rising tension in the city, which the police are not used dealing with. People are expecting the first eviction wave to be soon.
The mayor stated that he finds the situation very unpleasant and plans to charge the damages to the squatters, though he does not believe that there is much to get from them.
Following actions and updates will be announced as soon as possible.

A partir del 1 de octubre okupar en Holanda ya es ilegal. Las ciudades más importantes, sin embargo, decidieron no llevar a cabo esta ley.
Cuando el nuevo alcalde de Amsterdam, Eberhard van der Laan, anunció la semana pasada el desalojo de todas las 300 okupaciones lo más pronto posible, la gente quedó muy sorprendida y enfadada por los sucesos. Al día siguiente el principal fiscal de los casos de okupación, Otto van der Bijl, y el jefe especial de la unidad de desalojos, Leen Schaap, fueron amenazados y ahora tienen una protección policial las 24h del día.
Como respuesta a la nueva política de desalojos, 800 okupas y simpatizantes se manifestaron el 1 de octubre en Amsterdam. A raíz de la mani se okupó una casa y el grupo se quedó para apoyar y celebrar esta primera supuesta "acción ilegal de okupación". Después de un buen rato, la mani siguió hasta su punto de finalización. Después de unos cientos de metros, la gente implicada fue violentamente atacada por la policía de a pie y de a caballo, que trataron primero de romper la mani desde el frente, pero que fueron repelidos con éxito. Sólo cuando los polis cargaron a caballo desde atrás el grupo se dispersó. Esto no impidió que los okupas se defendieran y que tomaran las calles, lo que produjo disturbios durante varias horas en el centro de Amsterdam.
Por primera vez en una década, la policía intentó detener los disturbios lanzando gases en la manifestación.
En total hubo 11 detenciones, algunos polis y personas resultaron heridas y otros manifestantes fueron hospitalizados, de los que hay una persona con dos rajas en el cráneo. El hospital y el individuo están demandando a la policía por intento de asesinato. Todxs lxs detenidxs quedaron en libertad.
Al día siguiente tuvo lugar otra manifestación contra la prohibición de la okupación en Nijmegen con unas 600 personas. También aquí se llegó a un enfrentamiento violento con la policía. La policía a caballo atacó la manifestación y hubo gente seriamente herida. 9 personas han estado detenidas hasta hace poco. Todxs las detenidxs ya están libres.
Durante los días siguientes una comisaría de policía en Amsterdam fue atacada con cócteles molotov. Esta acción no ha sido reclamada por nadie. Desde el viernes, la policía antidisturbios, la policía especial militar, cañones de agua y helicópteros están en grandes números en toda Amsterdam. La estrategia de la ciudad de Amsterdam parece ser tener a los okupas en un constante estado de emergencia, lo que llevará a un aumento de la tensión en la ciudad a la que la policía no está acostumbrada. La gente espera que el primer desalojo llegue pronto.
El alcalde declaró que encuentra la situación "muy desagradable" y que planea denunciar los daños de los okupas, aunque no cree que se saque mucho de esto.
Las próximas acciones y actualizaciones se anunciarán en cuanto sea posible.
