New Social Centre Squatted in Ronda General Mitre, 9, <m> Lesseps, L3, Gracia |
19:00 Around 200 people gathered in Plza de la Virreina, Gracia, Barcelona to walk through the neighbourhood - flyposting details of up-coming events in the city (events against speculation, solidarity with the bus drivers strike etc.) and making pro-squat and anti-police graffitti. The demo passed by the bricked up shells of many evicted social centres in the neighbourhood, decorating them with graffitti and posters explaining the history behind the now lifeless buildings.
20:00 The demo arrived at Ronda General Mitre, 9 (in the Plaza Lesseps), and people succeeded in entering the long-empty building in good old-skool punk style! The new squat was then secured while people outside handed out flyers to those passing by, explaining the social, political and economic reasons for occupying the building.
The new social centre is called the Ateneo Mayo '37, to commemorate May 1937, the year the bourgoise republic and the communists (who today talk so much about historic memory) put an end to almost a year of social revolution. Another group, the M.I.L. chose this name forty years ago for their publishing house, which they financed through bank robbery... We chose this name because, although history is told by the winners, the true history of this city is in the revolts and the barricades, not in the universal expos or the olympics!
We aim to spread critical thought and action against the system, and to support other similar struggles.
LET'S RECOVER THE OLD SPIRIT OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD: HAPPY, COMBATIVE AND FULL OF LIFE
This action is one of many taking place this weekend around the world in defense of free, autonomous and squatted spaces.

Sorry, fast translation done late at night!
"Bank expropriations" doesn't really mean anything in English... "bank robbery" sounds much cooler and has positive connotations (from the history of highwaymen, robbin hood etc...)

A mi no em sembla massa excusa lo de no l'escric. Vaja jo hi ha moltes coses que no feia i ara faig... Vaja sobretot per coherència, volem un món millro construim-lo. Jo lo del català no t'ho haguera comentat però em sorpren amb quina facilitat i prepotència un diu que no sap català i per comptes de prendre classes encara t'exigeix que li tradueixis les opinions! |

al maig del 37, a barna hi havia molt cabron... a tot arreu. a fora i a dins de la telefònica.
clar que sempre serà preferible escriure els textos NOMES en espanyol, total, tothom ho enten. a argelia segur que el teu àrab seria una merda, parlaries i escriries en francés... i així ens va. i a sobre amb tota tranquilitat ens pasa per la cara que ho traduim els demés. |

Coi! Aquesta penya no s'ha enterat on són! Mira que escriguin en anglès...no m'agrada, però encara. Però que algú els expliqui que a Barna i als territoris de la mateixa llengua "square" s'escriu "plaça", i no "plaza"...i resulta que "may" no es tradueix com "mayo" sinó com "maig"....buf!
Com mola anar per Europa okupant i fent el traveler xupi-guai! Però resulta que cada vil.la i ciutat és diferent de les altres i cada lloc té la seva realitat...està bé averiguar-ho abans d'arribar-hi, no? |
