Police Attack 19 May Squatters' Protest

On Saturday, 19 May, 2007, at five in the evening, between 500-1000 people attempted to converge on Portal de l'Angel in Barcelona, Spain, for a protest against gentrification organized by the Assemblea d'Okupes (Squatters' Assembly). From the beginning, a heavy presence of police searched everyone who appeared to be part of the demonstration. They surrounded the protestors, prevented many people from entering the protest, prevented those inside from leaving, and did not allow the protest to move. For much of the three hour protest, the police kept the protestors on Via Laietana, blocking traffic. Eventually the demo was able to move to Pl. Urquinaona. Throughout the protest, police were shoving protestors, hitting them with clubs, and stabbing them with small spikes called kubotan—another crowd-control weapon not seen as often that allows the police to inflict pain and injury without the visually obvious and incriminating swinging of a club. Numerous demonstrators were bruised and otherwise injured. However most of the corporate media coverage headlined one cop who suffered a fractured nose for attacking protestors and preventing them from leaving. The demonstration was also followed by some twenty police vans and a helicopter. The protestors chanted “Union! Action! Autogestion!� and their banners brought attention to the 150,000 homes in Barcelona kept vacant and decaying by speculators, and called on people to join in solving the housing problem by occupying these vacant buildings.
There was also a bicycle block that attempted to join the march that was searched and broken up by police.
At nine that night, at least one spontaneous solidarity protest was held in the neighborhood of Sants, with over a dozen people with a banner and torches blocked a major road and condemned the police brutality.
