Call for Action:
First International Action in Defence of World Heritage Aboriginal Rock Art Sites in Western Australia’s Burrup Peninsula.

Where?
Main entrance (south side), Sagrada Familia, Barcelona, midday 7 January 2007.

Why?
Western Australia´s Burrup Peninsula is the world’s largest outdoor rock engraving site, containing rock art of world importance dating back to 30,000 years ago, including possibly the first ever representation of the human face in history. Woodside Petroleum and the Western Australian Government are planning to turn part of this site into a natural gas production facility against the wishes of the site`s Aboriginal custodians.
The Burrup Peninsula is the only Australian site on the World Monument Fund’s list of 100 most threatened monuments in the world, highlighting the importance of this site to humanity as a whole.

What?
To raise international awareness of the imminent threat to this world heritage site, Friends of Australian Rock Art are organising a series of actions in Europe at well known cultural monuments in Spain, Italy and France this January and February:

•     Sagrada Familia, Barcelona 7 January

•     Colosseum and Australian Embassy, Rome, 14 January

•     Vatican, Rome, 15 January

•     Pompeii, Naples, 23 January.

•     Eiffel Tower, Paris, February

•     Lescaux Cave, France, February.

Each of these global actions will be photographed, then posted on FARA’s ‘Stand up for the Burrup’ website as a way of showing Woodside and the Western Australian Government that their plans to damage the Burrup Peninsula are drawing international condemnation.
As each of these actions requires a minimum of 19 participants, we look forward to your participation at Sagrada Familia at noon on 7 January!

• Torre Eiffel, Paris, febrero
