1. INTRODUCTION
Welcome to first e-news service of the Catalan Solidarity: Ireland Committee, Llibertat! – Saoirse!
Catalan Solidarity: Ireland Committee was established to provide practical support and solidarity to Catalan political prisoners, their supporters as well as information on the continuing struggle for self determination and socialism in Catalonia to challenge the media portrayal on political militants that are being fuelled by a regime, its media, its paramilitary forces, and mounting repressive laws and legislations.
In order to assist these goals we have established an online news and information service to comment on the current political situation within Catalonia, from within the prisons and on the streets.

As part of our work we aim to provide information events, pickets and solidarity protests etc to highlight various campaigns and activities and to raise awareness of the political situation in Catalonia.

We urge both Catalans living in Ireland and other non-Catalans across Ireland to write to Catalan Political Prisoners, offering them both continued solidarity and support.

We intend to issue regular news, comments & activities via email by Llibertat! – Saoirse!

At present our website is under construction however, we hope that our work will inspire you to find out more!

2.     THE SPANISH POLICE’S AGRESSION AGAINST 3 YOUTHS IN VILANOVA I LA GELTRU (CATALONIA)

On the morning of February 2nd, at 4:00 am, three militants of the Independentist Left were taken to a police station by four agents of the National Police to be identified and finally accused of damage offence, while they were painting a mural in support of the Unitary Campaign for Self-determination AFEGIR LINK AL MANIFEST. What was to be an identification ended up as an illegal arrest without informing them about their rights. In the police station, the police intimidated and insulted the youths, with words like “you are scum, “bags of shit, “why don’t you shoot people and plant bombs? It is more macho, “xarnego (derogatory term for Catalans of Andalusian, Castilian… descent) and “moor scum. An agent also beat them repeatedly on their heads and legs. Finally, they were freed and informed that they were being accused of a damage offence. The collectives of the Unitary Campaign in Vilanova i la Geltru want to denounce this new police aggression originated because of our involvement in political and social movements of the town. Their aim is to end our activity.

WHERE THERE IS STRUGGLE THERE IS REPPRESSION, WHERE THERE IS REPPRESSION THERE IS SOLIDARITY!
AGAINST REPPRESSION, THE STRUGGLE IS THE ONLY WAY!

3.     PICKET AGAINST POLICE TORTURE IN VALENCIA

Last January 28th at 12pm around 50 people gathered together at the Central Market of Valencia called by Endavant-OSAN (Socialist Organisation for National Liberation) and Alerta Solidaria ( Anti-repressive Organisation ) against the attitude of censorship that the independentist movement is suffering from the City Council and the violence from the local police. We must remember on the night of February 22nd a neighbour of the Velluters area (Valencia), member of Endavant, was stopped by the Local Police at the same venue (Central Market) while he was doing some “linguistic normalisation actions by changing a traffic sign from Castilian (“Spanish) to Catalan. He was humiliated, insulted and they even applied electric shocks (something absolutely illegal) in a completely disproportionate intervention by the local police of Valencia.
From Alerta Solidaria, we want to denounce and expand the information about this police action, which takes us to examine the censoring and repressing role of Rita Barbera, the Major of Valencia who, from her position in the City Council, constantly cuts any exercise of our freedom of expression, as it happened with Pintem Junts (Let’s Paint Together), the results of which were quickly washed away from our streets.

We do not only want to denounce this situation that is becoming more and more usual in the city of Valencia, we also want to call everybody to continue the struggle in our streets so that our voice can be heard louder every day, without fear of repression and torture, demanding that freedom of expression that is continuously silenced and manipulated from the political power.

Repression won’t stop us, it will make us stronger and united!

4.     NO TO THE ESTATUT

We, Catalans, want to show our rejection to the Estatut d’Autonomia of Catalonia, a new imposition from the Spanish and the traitor collaborators upon the Catalan nation.

We, Catalans, reject the current Catalan political parliamentary parties and accuse them of not having any dignity and being coward in front of the Spanish oppression (military, economic and judicial).

We, Catalans, ask the rest of the Catalans to reject the Catalan political parliamentary parties, and to build the Catalan nation from the base, by participating in the Catalan independentist extra-parliamentary social movements, associations and organizations.

We, Catalans, ask the few Catalan politicians that still have some dignity left, to denounce the Spanish state in front of the United Nations and demand that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of December 1948, which established in its Article 1 the right of the peoples to self-determination, be applied.

We, Catalans, will continue to fight, in any possible ways, against the Spanish domination and the traitor collaborators, rejecting to support the current Catalan parliamentary political parties, and always voting against any Estatut d’Autonomia.

Freedom!
Independence!

5.     MANIFESTO OF THE UNITARY CAMPAIGN FOR SELF-DETERMINATION

During the last months, the politicians of the Principat de Catalunya and the Pais Valencia have been involved in the discussions on the reforms of the statutes of autonomy . However, what do the statutes mean? On 1978 the Spanish Constitution, which established the juridical and political frameworks of the Spanish state, was passed by the Spanish parliament. In order to content the widely assumed social and national expectations, a small administrative decentralization was established, through the “Statutes of Autonomy that give way to the creation of the “Autonomous Communities. Accepting the statute involved accepting the rules of the Spanish constitutional game, which is, accepting the limits imposed by it and the basic pillars of the system: capitalism, the denial of national rights, monarchy, etc.

The current reform of the statutes has its origin in the ruling classes, those who have a biggest interest in defending them, and with a special emphasis on the financial reform for the Principat, which they try to portray as the solution to the problems of the popular classes. We must be conscious that speculation, precarious conditions, the closing up of companies and de-localizations, the destruction of the environment and the shift towards the services sector, gender discrimination, etc… still exist and will continue for as long as neo-liberal policies that do no guarantee the basic social rights (education, health, housing, labour stability, food safety, energy, sexual equality…)are implemented and the economic model that prioritizes private property over any social value is kept.

Moreover, a large proportion of the Catalan society is condemned to a situation of “illegality and precariousness, through repressive and exclusive policies, because the autonomic powers want to absorb the competencies over immigration, while they do not suggest any alternative solutions to those already being implemented by the Spanish state

The Statutes are a direct attack to the ambitions of freedom of the Catalan Countries . They keep false identity symbols, such as the imposition of the “blavera (autonomic flag of the Pais Valencia, as opposed to the unitary flag of the Catalan Countries), and the denial of the unity of the language. They also reject any rights of the different Autonomous Communities to federate. Moreover, the Statutes they propose marginalise the Catalan language, they establish the co-officiality, instead of full official status, of Catalan, they keep linguistic secessionism and they guarantee the constant decrease in the use and teaching of Catalan by state laws, the imposition of Castilian as the language use in law and the submission of language use to the capitalist market (discrimination of Catalan in labeling and the media world, for instance)

It is not surprising, thus, that in front of the current crisis of the autonomic model, the rulers of both the state and the autonomic levels have rushed to renew the pact of submission. But they will not make us believe that the Statute belongs to us all. What we need is a popular and democratic constitutional process, in order to build a new model of political, social, economic and labour relations in the Catalan Countries. To do so, we must be able to decide our future freely, without threats or coercions, that is, we must exercise our right to self-determination.

NO REFORMS, NO STATUTES, SELF-DETERMINATION!

The Principat de Catalunya and the Pais Valencia form two of the administrative Autonomous Communities between which the Catalan territories under Spanish rule are divided. Only the Principat is officially recognised as Catalonia.
2 Regional constitutions for the Autonomous Communities
3 The financial reform involves transferring the collection and investment of taxes from the state level to the autonomic one.
4 Another term for Catalonia, widely used by the independentist left, that denotes the plurality of the Catalan territories.
5 The Catalan language is the main identity feature of a united Catalan nation. Trying to break it up by arguing that its different dialects are in fact completely different languages is one of the main strategies developed by the Spanish forces, especially in the Pais Valencia. No language specialists support these theses.
