TALKER
18 minutes, UK (2003)
language: English
serialscribbler

Talker is a "video-book", a reworking of an unpublished artist’s book (with Andrew Bick). The public voice of Talker champions "truth" and is always praying for those he meets. His refrain ("You have left the asylum and are waiting for a taxi to take you to paradise") is a gambit to the losers of the world. Talker is a proselytiser, a defender of the faith. But he keeps a private journal (Diary of a Network Methodist) in which he articulates a deep scepticism, exposes lost love and his history in the asylum. There are (too) many words/images in the book. The video (intercut with scenes from Dreyer’s Day of Wrath) attempts a fugue from both word and image, as if to escape from memory while it oscillates between stillness & movement, language & silence, love & truth.

Pattern
1 minutes, SERBIA (2003)
language: NO DIALOGUE
IVAN CVOROVIC

In a global war on terrorism, it is important to ask if a man or a women could be a terrorist, no matter where they're coming from. The video consists of two contrasting image sequences - constructive and deconstructive. The first part represents the process of creating the map of the world out of dough on a kitchen table. In the second part the destruction of the map is shown by cutting out pieces in the shape of a human; the map has been changed through human influence. Terrorism, which is shaking up the globe, might be an easier problem if only those with a certain psychopathology could be terrorists. We have to face the fact that anyone could be a terrorist. We all have the potential to commit the crime. Is this through imprinting? Instinct? Genes? The mechanisms of destruction that exists in every human being can be launched under specific circumstances. I believe this fact is universal and can be applied everywhere. Does this mean that we are faced with the same pattern of behavior, again and again?

Liberation Range
0 minutes, Australia/Italy (2003)
language: English

The filmmaker is fascinated by ethnographic museums, in which jewelry and costumes and artefacts sit alongside elegantly crafted weapons and armoury. These melancholic repositories of culture contain historical and ethno-specific traces of the human impulse to both create beauty and destroy life. "Liberation Range", is a catalogue for a range of ghostly body adornments for the epoch of relentless Perma War. It was created as the filmmaker's country Australia, along with the US and Britain, was in the process of invading Iraq, in what many of us continue to believe to be an unjust and illegal war and occupation. During the days of April 2003 she would construct collages of passive and abused bodies decorated by the latest expensive weaponry, and in the evenings she would watch Big Daddy's highly censored tele-feeds documenting the relentless aerial bombardment of cities with melodic names - Karbalaa, Fallujah, Nasiriyah. Occasionally she would see footage from Al-Jazeera of the dying and wounded, and with sadness and respect she used one of these brutal images in this work, the ultimate model for the new "Liberation Range" of jewellry.

EG Serene software applied to Clinic Defense Rehearsal "
11 minutes, U.S.A. (2003)
language: English

This video was constructed using original software, "EG Serene". The software manipulation of video in real-time is applied to a work from the informal archives of media activist and artist, Julie Zando-Dennis. "EG Serene software applied to Clinic Defense Rehearsal" takes a slice of time from the original video recording that documents preparations for the defense of women's healthcare and abortion clinics in Buffalo, New York. The Buffalo women's clinics were under assault by national anti-abortion forces during the spring of 1992. The structural algorithm of EG Serene software enables perceptual patterns to emerge out of the incremental alternation of two halves of a bisected video. Both mid-point and duration for the two alternating segments can be manipulated dynamically. In this video, the software interface is visible and emphasized as it manifests interactivity as conceptual and constructive labor.

AMG Strain software applied to ‘Way Up There: A Columbia tribute‘
8 minutes, U.S.A. (2003)
language: English

The video, "AMG Strain software applied to 'Way Up There: A Columbia tribute'," is part of a series titled "Strains of 2003" that improvises with the visually degraded images from web-streamed news videos collected with a slow (56k) computer modem. This video applies AMG software for the real-time manipulation of an msnbc.com news recording. The recording features Patti Labelle singing at a religious memorial for astronauts killed in the Columbia space shuttle disaster. It occurs in February 2003, as the USA prepares for the invasion of Iraq. Technologies of militarism and space exploration intersect with religious and pop culture symbols as we enter the dreamtime of the nationalist propaganda machine. The way to sift through a mound of sand is to start at the bottom, moving the hands upwards through it. The way to strain a flow of media is to move from the end of the flow to its beginning. The structural algorithm of AMG Strain software divides the video into multiple segments in real-time and plays back these dynamically variable-length segments in reverse order. The software interface is visible and emphasized as it manifests interactivity as conceptual and constructive labor.
